Ocimum sp (20 days baby leaf, 50 days full plant harvest) Holy basil is traditionally taken as an herbal tea. Used for medicinal purposes since ancient times in Hindu and Indian cultures for digestion and immune support. Easy to grow in containers, raised beds and gardens, it’s fragrant flowers and foliage can be harvested fresh or dried across the seasons. Also called Tulsi basil, it’s flavor is more complex than Thai basil and is often used in Indian, Thai and Asian dishes. 1-2″ long green leaves, with purple stems; it grows to a height of 16–22″.
Growing Notes
Start indoors 4 to 6 weeks before transplanting outside. Direct seed outside 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date when soil temperature is over 60°F. Germinates best in soils 70-90°F. Plant 1⁄4” deep, 2-3 seeds per foot; when 2” tall, thin to 8-12”. Transplant with 12” spacing when nighttime temperatures are warmer than 50°F. Emergence 5-10 days.
